When storing (Big Data) and especially querying a lot of data in the cloud, costs can quickly become very high. Google now launched FOCUS for BigQuery to reduce costs when using Google Cloud.

FOCUS stands for FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS). The goal of FOCUS is to establish uniformity and standardization in cloud billing data by consolidating cloud and usage data into a single, shared data schema. Prior to the introduction of FOCUS, there was no widely accepted industry standard for normalizing key cloud cost and usage metrics across various cloud service providers (CSPs). This lack of standardization made it difficult to understand how billing costs, credits, usage, and metrics aligned when transitioning from one cloud provider to another[1][2].

FOCUS simplifies the execution of fundamental FinOps capabilities for practitioners by providing a generic set of instructions and a unified schema, regardless of the dataset’s source. It…
